Gingerbread Cookies

1 C shortening
1 C molasses

6 C flour
1 t cinnamon
1 t salt
1/2 t ginger
1/4 t cloves

2t baking soda
1/2 C hot water

1 egg
1 C sugar
1 t vanilla

Simmer together shortening molasses. Set aside. Mix together
flour, cinnamon, salt, ginger and cloves.

Stir baking soda into hot water.

Cream together egg, sugar and vanilla. Mix in the water/soda
mixture. Add half of the dry ingredients. Mix in the shortening/molasses
mixture. Blend in the rest of the dry ingredients.

Roll out on a lightly floured board and cut into shapes. Bake at
375. Baking time depends upon size of cookies and weather you like
them soft or crispy.
