Pattern Sugar Cookies
4 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons cream of tartar 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 cup butter, softened 1 cup solid vegetable shortening 2 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon almond extract 2 eggs colored candies, optional colored sugar, optional favorite frosting, optional
In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cream of tartar and soda. In a large bowl, beat together butter and shortening until fluffy. Gradually beat in powdered sugar and extracts. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Gradually stir in the flour mixture until well blended. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 4 hours.
Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, roll out a portion of the dough to a 1/8 inch thickness, keeping remaining dough chilled until ready to use. Cut out cookies with a floured cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased or kitchen parchment paper-covered baking sheets. Sprinkle with colored sugar or candies as desired or leave plain to frost. Bake 8 to 11 minutes or until set but not browned. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
Makes about 10 dozen 2 inch cookies.
