Sugar Cookies

3 1/2 cups sifted all purpose flour
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
1 tablespoon milk

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Cream butter; add
sugar gradually and cream until light and fluffy. Add extract. Add
eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Alternately
add flour mixture and milk, beating until blended after each
addition. Wrap dough in foil or plastic wrap and chill several
hours or overnight. Roll out part of the dough at a time about 1/8
inch thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with floured 2 1/2 inch
cookie cutters. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and bake on ungreased
baking sheets at 400F for 8 to 9 minutes or until edges are lightly
browned. Cool on racks. Makes 6 dozen cookies.
